How to Identify Skin Tags?

Skin tags are benign skin-colored growths on the surface of the skin that resemble a small, soft balloon which is suspended on a slender stalk. They are typically small in size but occasionally larger skin tags are also found. Skin tags commonly appear in parts of the body with folds like the neck, under the arms, in the groin, and on the eyelids. They typically do not increase in size once formed.

What causes a Skin Tag?

Although it is not certain what causes tags, the friction due to the skin rubbing against skin can be a causative factor, since the growths usually occur among skin folds in the body. This condition is more common in people who are:

  • Overweight
  • Pregnant
  • Having members in the family with skin tags
  • Diabetic
  • Having viral infections like HPV (Human papillomavirus)

How are Skin Tags Treated?

Skin tags are not dangerous but it can be a source of discomfort or cosmetic woe for many. There are various treatment options available to get rid of skin tags like:

  • Cryotherapy: Removes skin tags by freezing the skin
  • Surgical excision: If the skin tags are hanging, they are cut off using medical scissors
  • Electrosurgery: Destroys the skin tag tissue with heat
  • Ligation: A suture is tied around the neck of the skin tag to cut off the blood supply

These treatment options are minor surgical procedures which cause minimal discomfort and minimal recovery time.

How to Prevent Skin Tags?

  • Maintain a healthy diet with low saturated fat
  • Exercise regularly
  • Keep all skin folds of the body dry and clean
  • Avoid clothing and jewelry that irritates your skin
